I am a textile artist

Devon Closewool and Bluefaced Leicester. I make use of regional
wool in three ways:
1/ Felt making kits for schools, inspiring children to make
felt, either with hands (The Woolsack) or with feet (Feet Felt),
lots of information about sustainable textiles and wool in
particular.
2/ The Leafcocoon is a modern take on an ancient idea, combining
the concepts of a shroud and a coffin, to be used for a greener
funeral and natural burial.
3/ Practical, useful and beautiful felt products for the home. |

I am a feltmaker based in
Somerset. My work is inspired by nature and its incredible range
of patterns and textures. I am self taught and when I first
started out making felt I used Merino (as instructed in the
book!) but since then I have become interested in using wool
from local & UK breeds for reasons of diversity and
sustainability.
At the moment I use Shetland, Blue Faced Leicester, Romney,
Gotland, Hebridean, Teeswater and Alpaca wool and I'm interested
in trying out more breeds.
Apart from making felt I'm also fascinated by natural dyes and
last year I grew my first crop of woad which I used to dye a
batch of Shetland and Romney. This year I aim to add a range of
other dye plants to my allotment.
I run regular feltmaking classes & workshops in my home town of
Frome. |

Fibre and Fleece
e-retailer, spinner, dyer etc.
Fleece from over 80 British Breeds all in one place! I am trying
to raise the profile of British Sheep fleece by selling only the
highest quality raw and hand washed fleece and also by providing
as many as 100 different breeds of sheep's fleece in one shop.
I hope that this will benefit both the rarer sheep breeds and
also the farmers as they will increasingly realise the benefits
of improving "fleece husbandry" and thus demand more for these
valuable commodities! I only sell QUALITY skirted fleeces as
this is part of my aim to raise the fleece profile. Good fleece
= more £ for farmer=better value for craftsperson=better deal
for sheep!!! |
